Brandi Mack is a mother of three beautiful daughters, a Holistic Health Educator, Therapeutic Massage Therapist, Trauma Informed Youth developer , Powerful Presenter and Permaculture Designer. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Human Service Management, and a certification from Star hawk’s Earth Activist Training. Brandi has worked and trained in holistic health and ecological sustainability with youth and adults for over 15 years.

Brandi currently is the National Director of The Butterfly Movement where we are committed to healing the wounds of our Soul (through Rebuilding and Re Framing our emotional selves), planting a Seed of faith as we Regenerate and Reconnect our hearts and our hands to the earth, leading ultimately to manifestation in the Soil of our Reactivated lives!

Stephen will present his experience in the creation of several different Ecovillage projects over the past 20 years, while living in Costa Rica. Chiraya will then lead the group in the second part of the day, for an Anchor The Dream Experience. The founder and primary Director of Punta Mona, has been living in Costa Rica, since 1995. Stephen observed the problems facing small farmers and communities in Central America and Costa Rica due to mega-monoculture agricultural practices and loss of dynamic community. He strives to provide students, landowners, businesses and neighbors regenerative solutions and strategies to increase quality of life. Stephen is an avid and passionate ethnobotanist, plant collector, permaculture designer and educator, operator of education environmental and botanical tours, implements permaculture gardens and food forests on home and many hundred acre scales, and community developer. He is the co-founder of both Medicines from the Edge: a Tropical Herbal Convergence and Envision Festival.

About Max Meyers

MAX MEYERS is an experienced Ecological Designer, Permaculture Teacher, Consultant, Registered Aquaculturist, Aquaponic System Designer/Installer, Rainwater and Greywater System specialist, Farmer, and the Executive Director of the Mendocino Ecological Learning Center a nonprofit educational organization and ecological reserve offering green job training and sustainable living skills to the public. In addition to the work at MELC, Mr. Meyers provides Ecological design services to the public, organizations, and schools through Osiris Designs and Nor Cal Aquaponics. Max Meyers, founder of Nor Cal Aquaponics, is a Certified Permaculture Teacher, Designer and consultant. He is the executive director of the Mendocino Ecological Learning Center (MELC) and runs a Permaculture consultation business.

Mr. Meyers is an experienced Aquaponics system designer and is the creator of truly self sufficient Permaculture based Aquaponics systems he calls Closed-Loop Aquaponics. Ever since breaking his back in a motorcycle accident, Max has been completely dedicated to learning all he can about all things relating to sustainable and regenerative living. Before his injury he was an auto mechanic and tropical fish hobbyist. He feels that Aquaponics is an absolutely perfect fit for his passions, experience and skills. In addition to his own experience, Max Meyers has studied and worked with many Aquaponics professionals including Dr. James Rakocy, PhD and Dr. Wilson Lennard, PhD, the only two people in the world currently holding a PhD in Aquaponics. By fusing Permaculture and Aquaponics Mr. Meyers has created systems that are some of the most self sufficient Aquaponics models on earth!

When Max Meyers applied Permaculture Design to Aquaponics a new generation of systems and farms were created. We call this new generation of Aquaponics, Closed-Loop Aquaponics. These systems are even more sustainable, productive and profitable than traditional Aquaponics!

Attending an MJ’s Brass Boppers shows is the next best thing to following a brass band down New Orleans’ famed Claiborne Ave. The swinging and singing brass-line is the Bay Area’s only New Orleans-style brass band whose founding members were born and raised in New Orleans itself.

For the past 11 years, Oakland-based LoCura has crafted their own unique musical identity: “Califas Mestizo Music,” a blend of Latin American and Iberian rhythms such as rumba, cumbia, salsa and flamenco influenced by punk rock, ska, rap, dub, reggae, dancehall with local and global lyrical themes. The band’s name (“it cures it”) reflects their ethos of making music a remedy, a theme which permeates lyrics such as “la cultura cura la locura (culture cures the madness).”

With three powerhouse women at the helm, their live shows are a soul-stirring punk-edged party mixing cajon-driven rhythms with mutilingual lyrics that reflect the unique intersection of cultures in the Bay Area. Ana Tijoux meets Manu Chao with a touch of Lhasa.

Herbal First Aid has the advantage of using materials that are widely available such as kitchen spices, weeds, and wild plants. In this regard, having knowledge of useful remedies that are often close at hand can be empowering to communities, especially those facing economic challenges, a catastrophic natural disaster, or just simply those who wish to live closer to the earth with a focus on resilience and self-sufficiency.

This Full Day Intensive will present strategies, remedies and routines gathered from two decades of working on the front lines in the forest defense and social justice movements, and administering off-grid first aid clinics at large outdoor gatherings. Geared toward the practicing herbalist or medical clinician, this class is also designed as an introduction to home health first aid for the lay person with no previous medical or herbal training.

For laypersons, homesteaders, wilderness trekkers, earthquake preparers, forest or social justice activists. Learn some basic herbal first aid skills and assessment tools or enhance your existing knowledge. Plant identification, wildcrafting/plant collecting ethics, herbal first aid kit ingredients techniques such as wound poulticing, sprain management and heat exhaustion. Empower your home or community toward greater self-reliance. Greta has practiced herbal first aid exclusively for nearly 30 years, and has first hand experience treating a wide range of injuries & ailments in children, livestock, and large groups of people. Students will gain an understanding of how to apply herbal first aid in their home and communities.

Learning Outcomes:

Understand the basic principles of responding to urgent or emergency type conditions in your community or neighborhood. Learn the steps in helping someone with an injury, and the top herbal remedies associated with many of our most frequent maladies that heroic medicine has little or no effective, sustainable or gentle solutions for.

Improve knowledge of the uses of common weeds and kitchen herbs, relatively easy to grow herbal medicines or difficult to find and obtain choice remedies. Understand the ethical dilemmas involved with purchasing manufactured medicines, and re-gain knowledge of inexpensive remedies for many of the most frequent maladies.

Learn how to prepare, set up and administer an effective herbal first aid kit for home health or a large remote clinic capable of treating hundreds.

Music As Medicine is collaborating with the Permaculture Convergence to offer this full day workshop with renowned artists Amikaeyla Gaston and Lydia Violet, facilitating group work filled with music meant to inspire resiliency in the spirit and a fire in the heart.

In this workshop we will explore our capacities to strengthen through community singing and engaging the histories of music born from social movements across the world. Singing in a council of friends is one of the most healthful, encouraging, invigorating, and nourishing things that we know. Hearts opened by grief and celebration want to sing their songs of longing, despair, belonging, reckoning, valiant warrior-ship, and gentle loving kindness. It’s our birthright (and a deep need of today’s world) to engage in this culture-creation together.

Lydia will also offer teachings and an exercise from Joanna Macy’s Work That Reconnects (WTR). This dynamic, interactive body of work was developed by Macy in response to activist burnout, born from her scholarship in systems theory, deep ecology, and Buddhism as well as 50+ years of international activism. Together we’ll learn tools, meditations, and concepts (deeply steeped in music making) that we can rest into and organize with, in our desires to be effective allies to both planet and people.

About Lydia Violet Harutoonian

Lydia Violet is an accomplished Iranian-American multi-instrumentalist weaving together Southern blues, American roots, and Iranian folk music traditions. In her live band she combines fiddle, banjo, and luscious 3-part harmonies to offer a soul-folk revival experience creating a new wave of protest music. Her weaving of West African percussion, clawhammer banjo, and gospel-inspired vocal parts take her audiences deep into the cave of roots music wonders. More music at www.lydiafiddle.com

Lydia has also studied closely with deep ecology elder and Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy for the past 9 years, learning how we can metabolize our pain for the world into energy for resilience, action, and community. She runs The Music As Medicine Project, a non-profit dedicated to creating access to music and music education as tools for cultivating resilient cultures in our communities.
