My name is Chief Caleen Sisk of the Winnemem Wintu Tribe, I’m the fifth leader in an unbroken traditional leadership since settler contact. Our ancestral territory expands all along the McCloud River watershed below Bulyum Puyuk (Mt. Shasta). In the 1940s, with the installation of the Shasta Dam, my people were flooded out of our homelands and our Salmon relatives were blocked from returning to their spawning grounds.

SALMON ARE SACRED

We believe that when Creator put us on this Earth we had no voice. Our Salmon relatives saw we needed help and gave us their voice. In return, we promised to always speak for them. Today, climate change, GMO farming, habitat destruction and water diversions for Big Ag are pushing our salmon relatives towards extinction . Our tribe has an ancient prophecy, “When there are no more salmon, there will be no more Winnemem Wintu people.” For this reason, we believe that we must do everything we can to bring back our salmon. There is still hope. Our tribe is taking action to save our endangered salmon relatives and restore this keystone species to its rightful place in the natural world.

OUR STORY

In the late 1800s and early 1900s, salmon eggs were taken from the McCloud River to populate the rivers in other parts of the world. After the Shasta Dam was installed, we thought we had lost our fish forever but in 2004, when news about our War Dance went around the world, a New Zealand professor contacted us saying, “We have your fish, do you want them back?”We learned that the eggs that had been taken to Aotearoa (New Zealand) survived in the glacier-fed rivers and existed in healthy numbers. Now we are on a mission to bring home the genetic descendants of our wild chinook salmon. This June we need to raise $85,000 to begin the process of restoring our wild, genetically pure winter-run, chinook salmon in our California waters. This has never been done before, but it is the only chance we have to save our endangered Salmon relatives.

THE TIME IS NOW

We are working to bring our salmon home. The descendants of our McCloud River salmon are thriving in Aotearoa (New Zealand), and they’re beginning their spawning journey upstream this month. This July we hope to travel to New Zealand with our tribal youth to collect samples for DNA testing to prove to the U.S. government that the New Zealand salmon are indeed our McCloud river fish. If we can’t complete phase 1, we may not have another chance. It’s now or never. We know that with your help we will make this project a reality.

The money we raise will go towards:

+$60K Will go towards hiring the staff and biologists to collect samples of the salmon and New Zealand’s administrative costs. This will also cover campaign fees and administrative costs.

HELP GET US THERE!

Our stretch goal will be to help fund our youth to travel to New Zealand in July to be a part of this historic restoration effort.

+$25k Will help get us to take our tribal youth to New Zealand to be a part of the restoration effort.

DONATE TO OUR GO FUND ME CAMPAIGN HERE

This has never been done before, but it’s our only chance of saving our Salmon relatives. We are ready to bring our salmon home to our waters. Restoring our salmon runs to the high mountain streams is the only hope we have in helping the salmon survive climate change and revitalizing our culture. Join us in this movement, follow our tribe and join us on this journey as we continue to carry out our #Run4Salmon prayer (see more: Run4Salmon.org ) to protect our waters, restore our salmon and revive our culture.

Social permaculture looks at the people-care aspects of permaculture. Vegetables are the easy part—people are the challenge! All groups struggle with issues of power, conflicts, and the need to make decisions. Collaborative groups may be healing, nurturing, and inspirational—or they may founder on the rocks of conflict and poor communication.

In this one-day intensive, we’ll look at regenerative patterns for human interaction. How do we come together across barriers and create spaces where we are welcome in the full complexity of who we are? We’ll explore how to structure our groups for maximum group health, how to share power fairly, improve our communication skills, mediate conflicts and facilitate group processes.

The foundation for this workshop is based on tools and practices from Starhawk’s book, The Empowerment Manual: A Guide for Collaborative Groups.

Workshop Description

Have you ever felt like you are here to participate in something big? Like you are a piece of a larger, intelligent whole that is on the verge of waking up? Do you ever wonder what your role is in the “Great Turning”? Many of us are sensing an inner-calling to rise up and be a leader in our communities, in a whole new way than has ever existed on the planet before. We long to be impeccable, aligned to our Soul Mission, and in service to others in a way that truly makes a difference. If we’re going to birth a just, sacred and sustainable new culture on Earth, we must face our fears, come into emotional balance and know that we have the power to transform our self-doubt, fear, and confusion.

Maria Owl invites courageous bridge-people, earth-healers and leaders to join her in exploring and activating your inner-Light-Leader. Maria believes that now more than ever, our sovereignty as individuals and as a planet can now be embodied. During this 4-hour deep dive, she will guide you through a reclamation process to meet your empowered multi-dimensional Self; the Awake, Timeless You who knows how to thrive, “reality-create”, heal, transform and love unconditionally.

Pulling from Universal Law, Quantum Physics, Energy Medicine and Indigenous Wisdom, Maria offers an experience one doesn’t easily forget.

In this workshop you will learn how to:

Embrace and consciously choose the power of transformation, rather than fear it

Release old patterns of self-sabotage and self-abandonment

Step into your most empowered, authentic voice and calling as a leader

Shift your “resonant field” through intention, sound, meditation and connection to nature.

Anchor in new neural pathways of new self-chosen empowering beliefs

Collectively envision a liberated human future and thriving Earth, and through the power of group intention – make it so!

This workshop will culminate in an hour-long Activation Ritual, where we will anchor in our new “resonant fields” and the new resonant field of our future/now Mother Earth.

She uses her stunning violin sounds, intricate 3-part harmonies, lyrical banjo, and strong instrumental arrangements to bring her listeners into a soul-folk revival experience woven into with new wave of protest music. Lydia has also studied closely with deep ecology elder and Buddhist scholar Joanna Macy for the past 9 years, learning how we can metabolize our pain for the world into profound communion with our human and more-than-human communities. In the past year she has performed alongside Climbing PoeTree, Ayla Nereo, The Polish Ambassador, Wildlight, Rising Appalachia, MaMuse, and Joanna Macy. From civil right songs to old-fashioned blues to sweet folk vibes, Lydia delights in sharing the medicinal power of music.

“Lydia’s violin has provided a spontaneous deepening of experience to all, as has her capacity for keen and genuine presence…” – Joanna Macy

“Lydia is a magical gypsy whose violin notes dance like fire and fall with the grace of water. She is one of the most talented violinists I’ve ever had the honor of working with. Her enthusiasm is absolutely infectious, and she is always so receptive to ideas, feedback, changes, and crazy impromptu improvisations. She beams a bright light, and it truly brightens up every person around her.” – Ayla Nereo

Grow your own! It doesn’t get more local or fresh than your own yard.
Want to create a personal Garden of Eden for you, your clients, or your
community? Want to eat fresh, local, organic produce while reducing your
environmental footprint? This workshop will focus on the how-to’s of creating a
beautiful, functional and food-generating garden, no matter how much space you
have. There will be an emphasis on incorporating ecological principles, such as
soil building, using perennial edibles, and planting for habitat enhancement.
The more food we grow at home and in our neighborhoods, the more food resilient
we become, relying less on remote agribusiness and for-profit supermarkets. We
reduce our environmental footprint by using less fossil fuel, less water, less
fertilizer and fewer chemicals.
There will be a power-point presentation, a group brain-storming session, and
sample plants followed by a question-and- answer session as time allows.

Friday, Oct 6 | 12:30 PM – 1: 30 PM | Zocalo

In a world where the industrialized food system has led us down a tangled path, where food choices have been reduced to the lesser-of-evils, and where distrust reigns, we are the champions of the greater good.

Tireless seekers of pure and delicious foods that will nourish our bodies and our planet, we have devoted ourselves to a dream, a vision, a mission. We will revolutionize the way the world eats! And in so doing we will bring nourishment and balance, health and well being, sustainability and community to people and planet.

We know change is hard but we want to make it easy. We went out looking for the kind of foods that packed a powerful amount of nutrition into every bite, so that you could make small changes to big effect.

We found superfoods—nutrient-dense powerhouses that can also be grown and processed in a sustainable way. These are foods that are truly good for you and for the planet. They’re foods like hemp and coconut, chia and red palm. They’re organic, full of vital nutrition, easy to use and delicious additions to your diet.

We say food doesn’t have to be a choice between the lesser of evils.
We say let food lead us to a better world.
We say super people deserve superfoods.
We say, come join us in our mission.
Together, we can change the world.

Founded in 2001, Empowerment WORKS (EW) is a global sustainability think-tank in action advancing community-led solutions for a thriving world.

Impact

In the world’s most culturally rich, yet economically challenged communities, access to markets, appropriate technologies and education can empower people to transform critical problems into opportunities for a socially, economically and environmentally sustainable future. Empowerment WORKS brings these vital tools within the grasp of citizens on the front lines of poverty and climate change.

Approach

Promoting global collaboration in support of local solutions, Empowerment WORKS fosters a diverse, cross-sector network of Partners in Empowerment (PIE) united in action by an ecologically social innovation framework called 7 Stages to Sustainability (7SS).

Through The Global Summit, Local Summits and other media and educational forums, these Partners are empowered to contribute their diverse skills, appropriate technologies and markets to catalyze local impact.

Through this holistic mission, Empowerment WORKS inspires people across the globe to realize the value of their existing knowledge, unique talents and collective potential to change the world.
