About the Yoga Farm

The Sivananda Yoga Farm is part of the International Sivananda organization founded by Swami Vishnudevananda. Our mission is to spread peace, health and joy through yoga and a yogic way of life. All are welcome to come and learn about how yoga can help maintain a healthy body, mind, and soul applied in daily life.

Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Center (SYVC)

The International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres is a non-profit organization named after Swami Sivananda, one of the most influential spiritual teachers of the 20th century and founded by his disciple Swami Vishnudevananda.

The mission – to spread peace, health and joy through yoga. All are welcome to come to our ashrams and centres to learn not only about how yoga can help maintain a healthy body but also how yogic philosophy, applied in daily life, can help maintain a peaceful mind and spirit.

In 1957, Swami Vishnudevananda on instructions from his guru, Swami Sivananda, came to the West to bring the teachings of yoga. He established the first Sivananda Yoga Vedanta centre in Montreal, Canada, in 1959 and to date there are close to 60 Sivananda locations (ashrams, yoga centres and affiliated centres) around the world. Over 35,000 teachers have been trained in the TTC programs.

The Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Ashrams and Centres are recognized worldwide for teaching yoga authentically, preserving its purity and tradition dating back several thousand years. They also offer a wide range of programs and even the possibility for spiritual growth through Karma yoga as a temporary or full time staff program participant.

Swami Vishnudevananda made the yogic teachings understandable and available to all by simplifying them into five points, showing specific ways to develop physical and mental health as well as spiritual growth through ~ Proper Exercise (Asanas), Proper Breathing (Pranayama), Proper Relaxation (Savasana), Proper Diet (vegetarian), Positive Thinking (Vedanta) and Meditation (Dhyana).

Together with Swami Sivananda’s revival of the yoga of synthesis tradition, which integrates the four paths of Yoga (Karma, Bhakti, Raja, Jnana), a well-balanced Sadhana (spiritual discipline) is achievable by those sincerely seeking for a change in their lives.

Get more people outside

Our overall mission is to get more people outside and, more specifically, to inspire the next generation of people who are passionate about exploring AND protecting our lands. Spending time outdoors has proven health benefits and fosters a deeper connection to the awesome, wild world out there. And we’re firm believers that people will only protect what they connect to and care about.

Getting more people outside really starts with access; access to land, but also to information about that land. We don’t think finding somewhere to camp should be such a time-consuming, convoluted and confusing process, which is why we started Hipcamp. We are committed to making getting outside fun, easy, and as simple as selecting what, when and where you want your camping experience to be. Need a campsite by the beach next weekend where you can bring your dog? We got you!

Bonterra vineyards have been farmed organically since 1987, long before organic products were widely available in America. The inspiration for farming this way was simple: organic grapes produce the purest expressions of the varietals and land on which they are farmed. At Bonterra, we have a deep respect for the environment. Organic farming and regenerative practices enrich the biodiversity in our vineyards year after year.

Our three ranches (Blue Heron, McNab and Butler) are certified Biodynamic® by Demeter and our status is reviewed annually to ensure that each ranch adheres to the Demeter Farm Standard. The principle of Biodynamic farming is the simplest way to understand what it is: a living organism which is self-contained, self-sustaining, and follows the cycles of nature.

Mission

Bay Area Green Tours 501 (c) 3 serves as a conduit to solutions for a more sustainable future and a bridge from the past to all new possibilities. The fundamental idea of Bay Area Green Tours arose from a fourth grade field trip to a waste water treatment plant in New York City which our Founding Executive Director, Marissa LaMagna, attended. She couldn’t help but wonder: “Where does all the waste go”?

Ever since Marissa has been an ambitious environmentalist trying to make the proactive changes we need to ensure the health and well being of our shared planet and future generations. In 2008, Marissa began a project of The San Francisco Green Festival, named Bay Area Green Tours which has grown by now into an educational organization showcasing local green models focused on creating a positive and sustainable future.

We provide educational tours and events that demonstrate the sustainable economy in action, inspire support of local green businesses, and empower people to incorporate environmental responsibility and social justice into their personal and professional lives.

Rethinking Agriculture

The Biodynamic Association awakens and enlivens co-creative relationships between humans and the earth, transforming the practice and culture of agriculture to renew the vitality of the earth, the integrity of our food, and the health and wholeness of our communities.

Founded in 1938, the BDA is considered to be the oldest sustainable agriculture non-profit organization in North America, with more than 1200 member farmers, gardeners, entrepreneurs, and eaters across the continent.

Biodynamics was developed in the early 1920s by the Austrian philosopher and social reformer Rudolf Steiner. Steiner is considered one of the pioneers of the organic farming movement and biodynamics is considered by many to be the most advanced and holistic form of organic farming and gardening on the planet. Over the past years, biodynamic practitioners have played a key role in the renewal of agriculture—helping pioneer the early organic farming movement; inspiring the work of Silent Spring author Rachel Carson; piloting the first community supported agriculture (CSA) programs; and demonstrating how to bring health and flavor back into our food.

Parcels will be sold to people who agree to a basic common vision, to a community lifestyle, and to working together to create shared guidelines for the development of the EcoVillage.

The design is along the lines of an intentional neighborhood; people will have privacy but will be close to neighbors in both physical space and in the designs that facilitate community.

There are many opportunities to create common uses that allow members to have more, while spending less. Some of the sustainable lifestyle features we envision could include: community house built with locally harvested materials, sauna/hot tub bath house, solar microgrid, biodiesel filling station, an electric car co-op, rainwater catchment, graywater, permaculture landscaping and shared gardens, etc.

OUR VISION AND VALUES

Mission: Create a functioning regional currency that helps local businesses thrive while promoting collaboration and building community wealth.

Vision: We envision a greater Bay Area where sustainable, regional economic growth and development are in service of the people and the environment, rather than corporate profits. We envision an economy that promotes stewardship of our land and local resources, supports local business and innovation, drives re-localization of production, and recreates the market from being merely transactional to a place for community building.

Values: Bay Bucks is aligned with the values of the New Economy 2.0 movement, which aims to create and spread successful models of local economies that value life over money. We are the organizer of the Living the New Economy Convergence. We also value integrity, collaboration and respect. We strive to build a community where each member will uphold these values, so that we can all work together to achieve our goals.

Strategy: We believe that our current monetary system is driving environmental destruction and destroying human relationships. We must build a regional, complementary currency to uplift a new regional economy. The currency must be designed to incentivize collaborative and sustainable rather than selfish and destructive behaviors. We learned from an immensely successful regional currency from Switzerland called the WIR, enhanced it with more social features, and implemented it in the Bay Area. This complementary monetary system operates through a business-to-business barter exchange.

The school is committed to skill sharing and non-hierarchical structures. Our goal is to give you the knowledge and hands-on experience to get started on your own right away. We may not have the answers to every question, but we will work with you to discover how to get them. Your own knowledge and information is welcome at every class.

At IUH we believe that education is an important vehicle for changing ourselves and the world. The school is a direct result of deep inquiry into activism and how to best change the way we live in this country. We believe that people who are self-reliant, self-sufficient, and who know how to live in balance with their environment- whether urban or rural- are essential to that change.

soilnotoilcoalition.org/

About the Soil Not Oil Coalition

Global food security of future generations is at risk. The Soil Not Oil Coalition is a group of scientists, environmental organizations and citizens who share concerns over the decline in soil health, which is the result of the use of fossil fuels and synthetic products during the last 60 years. We believe that restructuring land management practices is key to combating climate change, restoring water cycles, reducing global environmental pollution, stopping ocean acidification, re-establishing biodiversity, improving food production and revitalizing local economies across the planet. The corporate agricultural practice of using more chemicals, more often at higher concentrations with high transportation costs, is not sustainable and deteriorates soil health and productivity, while only benefiting corporate financial interests. Furthermore, we recognize that rapidly accelerating human-caused climate change is a current threat to food security and requires urgent action to halt the reckless and expanding fossil fuel industry. The Soil Not Oil Coalition promotes research and further understanding to optimize soil carbon sequestration and sustainability, to aid in the development of adequate food production for future generations and to help reverse the effects of global warming.
