Mario will introduce the Community Food Forestry Initiative (CFFI), a national initiative funded by USDA Forest Service Community & Urban Forestry grant. The initiative takes a unique and innovative approach to address the challenge of urban and community tree canopy loss due to re/development by providing planners, developers, policy-makers, designers and practitioners a comprehensive set of resources that integrate food-producing trees and plants into the urban landscape. In addition, it will help raise public and professional awareness around the issue of using urban places to grow food.

With so many categories, ideologies, philosophies, styles of growing food sustainably, it is challenging for beginning farmers to enter the local food system with their own identity. Adaptive Agriculture is the concept that the science, art, and business of growing food is going to be entirely unique to the individual or group managing the system, and it MUST be flexible enough to change. Defining your context requires: identification of your values and intentions, placing yourself consciously in your surrounding ecology, and understanding the markets and communities of which you are a participant. Our contexts are constantly in flux, and adaptive agriculture necessitates an awareness and openness to change.

This is relevant to a community that loves labels and recipes, and it helps encourage questioning, skepticism, and constant observation. The idea that our world is constantly changing, that boundaries are constantly blurring, is central to the theme of adaptive agriculture and also central to the idea of building bridges! We encourage adaptive agriculturalists to look at all the ideologies and strategies and pick and choose to create their own unique form of agriculture based on their context and perspective.

Networking the Transformational Ecosystem consists of a number of social enterprises and non-profits (generally 15) giving 3-minute presentations in front of the participants, and then connecting with the participants directly at tables. The organizations present on who they are, what they do, what their needs are, and how you can get involved. Each round of presentations consists of 5 organizations, and rounds are broken up with "tabling/networking" rounds, where each of the presenting organizations tables for 10-15 minutes and receives interested participants who can connect directly with them about engagement opportunities with their organization.

NuMundo has presented this interactive networking event at Bioneers (USA), Lucidity Festival (USA), Boom Festival (Portugal), Envision Festival (Costa Rica), Cosmic Convergence Festival (Guatemala), as well as at co-working spaces internationally. We’re creating a container for emergent conversations, sharing new ideas, and new opportunities for creative collaboration and participation with existing organizations and attendees. This will be an inspiring, engaging and activating networking session for each of the power-house organizations involved and each participant looking for community support, projects to get involved with, or new inspirations to share!

Transition Streets is a neighbor-led project to reduce household energy and water use, build resilient local food systems, and build community resilience and increase social cohesion on your street. It takes the systemic thinking of Transition & Permaculture and breaks it down into a simple curriculum with actionable steps that add up to real change. If you’ve been looking for ways to engage your neighbors and launch resilience-building on your street, you will want to take in this workshop!

Transition Streets is a relatively new and very successful project of Transition US which has been used in dozens of communities across the country. It combines a number of strategies: saving money on household bills; getting to know your neighbors; leadership and facilitation development; community dialogue; as well as reducing energy/water/waste. It is definitely a “building bridges” project, particularly between near neighbors. The workshop will provide participants with a taste of the curriculum as well as tips on how to implement it (for example, outreach to neighbors & local media, running a successful meeting) and other takeaways/lessons learned from the project. Presenters will include TUS staff (Carolyne Stayton and Joshua Shepherd) as well as local Transition leaders who have implemented Transition Streets in their own neighborhoods. This workshop will be primarily informational although there will be a number of participatory exercises to really relay the flavor of the project and its potential for greater systemic change.

Raising consciousness is hard work, like transforming the war shield (hate) into a peaceful place (love); we need resilience-centric tools, bottom-up community processes to achieve new rituals and traditions. We seek a spiritual permaculture.

The alchemic sequence: War Shield > SpiritShield > New Myth is an artistic, participatory process; a timeline, story board, psychic protector and archetypical projection in the future. As a two-way conduit between the conscious and sub-conscious, the process of creating a new shield is one strategy to design and test new myths, rituals and traditions.

Questions for participants:

1. How do you compare and contrast the two shields?

2. Which of the 12 Elements of Modern Mythology are pertinent to this New Myth?

3. Do any of these general story themes spark your interest for the SpiritShield Myth to come?

a. Spring – Sun – Summer – Fall – Winter

b. River – Land – Sun – Sky – Moon

c. Soil Renewal – Planting – FAMILY – Tending – Harvesting

4. What design elements on the SpiritShield speak to you?

5. If you built a real, full-size SpiritShield, how and where would you use it?

6. Does the SpiritShield illustrate any specific ethics and values?

7. Has is work changed your definition of spirit in any way?

8. What format would you like to use to create the SpiritShield New Myth (.png, .mov, word, etc.)
