<p>I perceive two radically different approaches to sustainability developing, one of dense, &#8216;smart&#8217; cities and another of dispersed eco-villages and market towns. I suspect that most advocates of each approach are at best mildly aware of the other concept, but choosing wisely bids us understand both well. A summary of the 2 approaches, their advantages and constraints, will be presented, followed by discussion.</p>
