Jan Spencer took his PDC in 1991 in Austin, Texas. He moved to Eugene in 1992. From the start in 2000, Jan intended to transform his quarter acre suburban property. Significant amounts of basic needs are taken care of on site. He has a 6500 gallon rain water system, edible landscaping all over, he took out the driveway and turned a garage into living space. The sun room is a closed in south facing former patio.

Jan has been advocating the transformation of suburbia since 2000. He has organized dozens of permaculture bike tours, hosted well over 1000 people at his home. He has made speaking tours and presented at conferences on the West Coast and North East. Jan was the coordinator of the 2015 Northwest Permacutlure Convergence in late August in his own Eugene suburban neighborhood.
