Back due to popular demand, this hands- hearts- and bodies-on workshop returns for the second year to explore play and sacred clowning as tools for social permaculture. Endless urgency and intellectual seriousness are symptoms of a mechanistic, burn-out activist culture. Social sustainability requires different skills than those practiced within the Western capitalist paradigm. Forget those creepy clowns from childhood nightmares – come learn how to use the craft of clowning and play to bring life and joy into our movements. Play facilitates honest cultural critique and creates space for creative alternatives. And, it’s very fun. Notes: No experience necessary. Come especially if you have no experience.

We’ll start with an interactive exercise: a well-intentioned group of like-minded people unable to get anything done, because everyone wants to have a say in everything, and everyone has to agree on everything.

Once we’re all nice and frustrated, Mud Hut will lead a presentation about the importance of governance — dealing with authority in a clear and explicit way, because if you don’t, you get stuck. The presentation will cover Holacracy and self-management, ranging from the big-picture elements, like trust, emotional maturity and alignment with purpose, to the nuts/bolts: the rules and jargon and what functions they serve. Then he will facilitate a Holacratic-style governance meeting to experience an alternative to dealing with the same issues we started with.

Jacki Saorsail is the Membership Coordinator and Building Manager at The Integral Center, a 14,000 square foot transformational community center in Boulder, Colorado. She has been through Aletheia, Authentic Relating Comprehensive, and Authentic Leadership and Facilitation Training at The Integral Center and is working on a Masters Degree from Gaia University studying Regenerative Enterprise Design. Through her business consultancy, Regenerative Dynamics, she guides people through building their own community centers, cooperatives, and intentional communities.

Don Hall is the founder and Executive Director of Transition Sarasota. Previously, he worked for two years as the Education and Outreach Coordinator for Transition Colorado (now, the Local Food Shift Group), the first official Transition Initiative in North America and a statewide hub. Don holds a Master’s in Environmental Leadership from Naropa University and is a certified Permaculture Designer and US Transition Trainer.

Carolyne Stayton is the Executive Director of Transition US (the national hub of the international Transition Towns Movement). She has an advanced degree in nonprofit management and her background includes serving as Director of New College’s North Bay Campus of Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community, an innovative educational institution that promoted advanced studies in leadership and community-building. Carolyne resides in Graton, California where she participates with others in building a future to live into.

2016 Convergence Workshop: Building Resilient Neighborhoods with Transition Streets

Over the last 18 years, Sky Blue has been a member of Twin Oaks Community, a housing collective, a student housing cooperative, a cohousing community, and two small worker co-operative businesses. He current works as the Executive Director for the Fellowship for Intentional Community. He’s visited dozens of communities and cooperatives, in the US and in Europe. Living in community and furthering the larger cooperative movement has been a primary focus of his entire adult life.

He’s played a formal or informal role in a number of organizations, as well as forming or developing groups. At Twin Oaks he’s had many jobs, including, manager of the Twin Oaks Communities Conference. He also serves as one of the Twin Oaks delegates to the Federation of Egalitarian Communities, and serves on the Council for the Global Ecovillage Network of North America.

On a more personal level, Sky is an amateur musician and DJ and loves organizing all manner of events, from parties to conferences. Personal growth and healthy interpersonal relationships are another focus of his life. He is the father of a teenager. His life is about bringing people together to make the world a better place for everyone.
