Aaron Fernando works with Bay Bucks, a local currency and business community in the Bay Area of California. He is now passionate about money reform and believes that local currencies address a wide range of problems including inequality, environmental degradation, and the erosion of social capital. He formerly worked in the nonprofit sector in Washington DC, spent some time traveling in Southeast Asia, and ultimately moved to the Bay Area specifically to work with Bay Bucks and promote local currencies. Aaron sees the Bay Bucks currency as a well-designed tool to build trust between members and increase community resilience. He is an advocate for new economic thinking, writes for Sri Lanka’s leading business magazine about these issues, and hopes to become a thought leader on money reform. Aaron holds a B.A. in International Development & Social Change with a focus on Economics from Clark University.

Throughout the 1970’s and 80’s she explored intentional and traditional communities as a means to create a basis for a culture that provided both for physical needs and the basic human need to belong. As a member of the Board of Directors of the Global Ecovillage Network, its representative to the UN, and as a co-founder of a women’s sewing cooperative and two ecovillage projects in Latin America,Huehuecoyotl Ecovillage in Mexico and Caravana Arcoiris por la Paz por la Paz she has shared her experience and knowledge in 30 countries. With Andrew Langford she co-founded ia University,, now in its 11th year. She has a particular interest in the social permaculture approach to community development, women’s empowerment, nested enterprises and creative design. Andrew Langford: Chief Permaculture Officer (PCO) developed strong practical experience with academic skills by interspersing periods of work in manufacturing, farming and professional practice with post experience Diploma and Graduate studies. Because of this blended pathway he is both a skilled designer and practitioner and persistent advocate for action based, experiential learning. Andrew pioneered permaculture in England in the mid 1980’s becoming the first UK Permaculture Teacher. He then went on to create the independent UK Diploma of Applied Permaculture Design system, now in it’s 22nd year. This Diploma template has formed the basis of the action un/learning methodology of Gaia University, founded in 2004 and now used to support resilience practitioners around the world in their efforts to create sustainable farms, ranches and associated community projects. Recognizing the essential need for climate solutions Andrew heads the design and consulting team of Cambia. works.

Her bi-cultural upbringing has had a strong influence in her believes, values and how those manifest through her work in the world. This led her to spend a decade between Santa Fé New Mexico, Oakland, Bahia Brazil and Southern India working on various arts and ecological development projects. It was during this time that she saw one can’t address long-term sustainable development without first addressing short-term economic development. In 2013 she received a gMBA in Social Enterprise driven by the belief that the current paradigm of ‘development’ can be transformed into one that is valued based on ecological regeneration and social equity.

Serving as Student Representative on SAEA’s Steering Council and the External Advisory Board of the Agricultural Sustainability Institute at UC Davis, Andrew K. Baskin pioneered original research as a McNair Scholar with departmental honors while earning his B.S. in Sustainable Agriculture and Food Systems. The UC Davis College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences Dean’s Circle along with USDA-NIFA have awarded Baskin funding to speak at conferences nationwide (UC Davis, UC Berkeley, Harvard, North Carolina State University, Ohio State University, etc.) Painfully aware that our institutions of higher education perpetuate systemic oppression, Baskin gratefully acknowledges his privilege to access these networks and work to bridge this divide. By prioritizing solutions-focused leverage points for systemic change that elevate collective health, justice and sustainability in the dimensions of agroecology, food systems, and cooperative economics, Baskin cultivates a praxis of values-based systems thinking rooted in the pursuit of economic autonomy and cultural healing.

Asa Schaeffer is an innovative medical cannabis entrepreneur and industry expert. He meticulously follows all aspects of his medication, from genetics to end user product, with the attention to detail and expertise that only an expert with 10+ years of experience can provide.

Asa is the CEO of Sonoma County Collective, a not for profit medical cannabis collective based in Santa Rosa, CA since its 2010 inception. His meticulous plan- ning and preparation has helped SCC leave an industry wide mark, characterized by their innovative delivery service model and commitment to outstanding customer service. His longstanding industry connections have allowed him to easily and sucessfully make the jump into the ermerging medical cannabis sector and other relating industries. True to Asa’s compassionate nature, SCC has implemented an outstanding Compassion Program in order to make sure those in need and without the means still receive the level of care he prides himself on helping provide.

His “brain child” Cherry Kola (a Sonoma County Collective proprietary strain),

is the result of years of hard work and dedication to providing a unique high efficacy medication for those in need. He took this to the next level in 2012 with his aggressive marketing and branding of the Cherry Kola name. His hard work came to fruition with Cherry Kola welcoming a positive public reception and being awarded numerous accolades in the following year.

His recent expedition into the medical cannabis edible industry is hallmarked by the 2013 Emerald Cup release of “Kola Bars”, a strain specific line of cannabis infused high end chocolate bars, showcasing his proprietary Cherry Kola strain. Creating this new line of products has not only allowed him product diversification, but has allowed him to reach a niche market featuring patients whom some necessitate another means of ingestion. His This type of win/win situation is typical of Asa and is a direct result of the win/win mentali- ty he takes into the industry.

Asa’s dedication to health goes far beyond his affinity for natural medicine and into proactive treatment utilizing exercise and cus- tom-tailored personal training. He served as a personal trainer for 5+ years and has focused on overall health and well-being for the entirety of his adult life. He also enjoys numerous outdoor activities, especially those in the “extreme sports” sector. His extreme sports guide service, “Sonoma Extreme Sports”, has been servicing local enthusiasts for over 4 years now. His commitment to the local com- munity’s health and well-being is further demonstrated with his fitness and personal training center, “Fitness For Life”.

Activism and advocacy also play an important role in Asa’s commitment to the medical cannabis community and builds off his collec- tives dedication to further enlightening the public about medical cannabis, the positive science surrounding it and its known/poten- tial medical benefits. He is an active member of Americans for Safe Access (ASA), the Sonoma Alliance for Medical Marijuana, and the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). As a true industry expert, his knowledge of indoor/outdoor cannabis cultivation is beyond reproach. His expertise was most recently recognized when he was called upon to serve on the 2013 Em- erald Cup Better Business Practices Panel with other industry experts, such as Steve DeAngelo (owner/operator of Harborside Health Center). A master of all facets of cannabis cultivation, from start to finish, he specializes in the planning and execution of large scale cannabis grows while adhering to all required guidelines. His innovative cultivation techniques allow him to find the most efficient ways to grow, under any of the varying conditions indoor/outdoor cannabis cultivation can provide. Asa’s attention to detail and con- stant innovation make him a force to be reckoned with in the cannabis industry.

Let’s talk about Design and Social Justice. We know that design has the power to elevate everything it touches—from products, to systems, to spaces. But when it comes to our greatest challenges around economic equity, access, and inclusion, what roles does design play in advancing equitable communities? Can design catalyze positive change and lasting impact when it comes to solving real problems and human needs? Join us for a discussion focused on how design can support social progress and a just future for all.

They will observe, learn, and discuss the difference between Equality & Equity. They will explore their own agency, and how they can use data such as historical conflicts, to analyze a relevant equity issue, and communicate their findings. They will form this “issue analysis” (engaging in discourse and working in groups) to answer core questions important to their communities. The Design Thinking process involves using “manipulatives” (tangible objects) to make examples of ideas, sharing observations among groups, and also documenting observations/ideas in many different ways: sketches, photos, journaling, audio.
