Join us for a hands-on workshop where participants will engage in the process of preparing food from acorn from start to finish. While we pound and leach acorn we will also discuss land stewardship techniques for managing oaks for acorn production, how to gather and sort acorns, various methods for leaching, a cooking demo, as well as easy and delicious recipes to take home.

Learning to prepare food from acorn is an ancestral skill, universal to anyone with ancestry from the northern hemisphere. Oaks are not only an incredibly abundant native tree that offer a multitude of uses (including nutritious food), they are a keystone species essential for biodiversity, and require human relationship in order to thrive. In addition to offering management tips for oaks, this 3-hour hands on workshop will empower folks with practical foraging and cooking skills. The workshop will include a beautiful display of edible and medicinal native plants and crafts, as well as a full setup of acorn processing for participants to get their hands dirty and engaged in the leaching process, and if possible, a small cookstove where we will fry up acorn fritters with elderberry syrup (if not, we’ll just bring the finished product for folks to taste).

California’s uniquely biodiverse ecology has developed over thousands of years through humans interactively managing the landscape. We will discuss practical land management techniques that enhance ecological conditions and provide abundance for the human and non-human world.

California’s incredibly biodiverse native landscape has relied on human management for thousands of years, and this workshop will help empower participants to restore their place as a beneficial component of the ecosystem. Bringing together the worlds of wildcrafting and ecological restoration, wildtending for food, craft, medicine, in a way that enhances ecological indicators is a land management approach that embodies the principles of building community and resilience. An engaging lecture full of beautiful photos, practical examples, plant lists for designers, and management strategies will help inspire permaculturalists to engage and interact with the native ecology that surrounds us.

As former Executive Director of the Solar Living Institute and co-founder of Villa Sobrante, an urban demonstration site for sustainability and intentional community, she possesses a diverse skill set in the development and management of environmental education programs. As an ecological design consultant, she has also spent over twelve years developing land management and environmental education programs with indigenous communities in California, Mexico, and Australia, as well as overseen the planning and implementation of a diverse range of restoration projects. She graduated Magna Cum Laude from UCLA with a B.A. in Latin American Studies and a B.A. in Comparative Literature, where she focused on studying contemporary Latin American indigenous sovereignty movements.
