As an international, multicultural, woman who studied system nuances and societal constructs, Nkolo teaches the principles of Design Thinking, and how to apply the human-centered design process with an equity mindset, to build the regenerative communities we hope to see in our lifetimes. As a first generation American, born in New York City, Mallika grew up at the intersection of cultures and between urban and natural wild spaces, and has made it her life work to heal that divide and bring people closer to the heart of the living world. Effie Rawlings’ interest in education, Agroecology, and community organizing was catalyzed by her family’s experiences farming seed, her time serving as Cryptologic Linguist in the US Army, and her introduction to processes of decolonization at Sisonke School, South Africa. Her interests found a nexus at the Gill Tract Farm, where she helped win the 20-year struggle to protect the land from pavement. Today, she farms, organizes, and teaches at the Gill Tract, recently joining some of its youngest farmers at the learner-led Five Creeks Studios. She also organizes internationally with the friends of the Landless Workers Movement of Brazil. Brooke Porter is a local Bay Area educator and artist who has taught a wide range of subjects from permaculture and gardening to Spanish and visual art. She has worked in Latin America on issues regarding women’s role in preserving traditional forms of agroecological farming and speaks both Spanish and Portuguese. During this pivotal moment in which our planet is faced with rapid climate change, ecological degradation, and social unrest she seeks to help create regenerative food systems. She is also an award winning photographer whose images span from birth photography to social documentary work.

Grow your own! It doesn’t get more local or fresh than your own yard.
Want to create a personal Garden of Eden for you, your clients, or your
community? Want to eat fresh, local, organic produce while reducing your
environmental footprint? This workshop will focus on the how-to’s of creating a
beautiful, functional and food-generating garden, no matter how much space you
have. There will be an emphasis on incorporating ecological principles, such as
soil building, using perennial edibles, and planting for habitat enhancement.
The more food we grow at home and in our neighborhoods, the more food resilient
we become, relying less on remote agribusiness and for-profit supermarkets. We
reduce our environmental footprint by using less fossil fuel, less water, less
fertilizer and fewer chemicals.
There will be a power-point presentation, a group brain-storming session, and
sample plants followed by a question-and- answer session as time allows.

Friday, Oct 6 | 12:30 PM – 1: 30 PM | Zocalo

Learn how to apply permaculture to your diet with seed to table cooking!

Using holistic management and permaculture design concepts, Matt Powers will take you through an exploration of seed to table planning and cooking, and regenerative preservation and preparation habits. Includes guided group exercises: seasonal food guild planning & reverse engineering our diet! Fun for the entire family! Permaculture bridging the gap between the garden & the plate!

Food is core to building community as well as resiliency – understanding how to cook and preserve the food we grow is a critical skill few are teaching and needs to be a focus. It builds a bridge between the kitchen and the garden in a new way. I will be using an overhead projector, hand-outs, pencils/pens, grouping, discussion, examples, and guided practice. In addition to it demonstrating new planning skills for planting out our properties that match our food needs it helps participants recognize how permaculture acts as a lens that can be applied to any situation and context. Everyone who participates will leave with a plan for planting out food and plants that will meet their food needs through planning out seasonal food guilds and calculating the amount of each kind of food already being consumed in their diets. For kids this will show them the connection between diet and season as well as the power of permaculture planning and design concepts.
