Jessica Bates of El Sobrante, CA, based Food Forest Farm West will highlight the basics and important features of designing a food forest in an urban environment. We will discuss incorporating the over-story and understory, plant placement, as well as maximizing vertical space. We will also cover how earthworks to slow, spread and sink water into the landscape, differ in an urban environment from in large open spaces. We will also discuss the how to’s of incorporating community within an urban food forest. With what we have learned, Jessica will ask people to group-out and the groups will design & sketch small urban food forests. Participants will be placed in groups and will be given 60 min to design, sketch and present their urban food forests.
